Information = the new indoor plumbing : public libraries on Newsnight

For those who missed it, Monday’s  episode of Newsnight provided an interesting preview to the DCMS Library Review (due to be published next week). The first part looked at the recent campaign in Swindon as an example of the struggle between old and new libraries. The newly build library is described as the height of  innovation featuring  “Computers, magazines, DVDs, and cappuccinos and greetings cards…”, –though arguable a few of those things have been available in libraries for some time now.

The second half of the segment featured Culture minister Margaret Hodge and Children’s author,  Alan Gibbons debating ways to improve public libraries.  Not much was given away about next week’s report, though it seems likely ebooks will feature.

You can catch the episode on iPlayer (the library segment starts at around the 20 minute mark).
