Great to see a proposal for librarians on Area 51 of the Stack Exchange Network. Stack Exchange is a collection of collaboratively edited question and answer sites, the most well-known of which are Stack Overflow (for programmers), Super User (for computer enthusiasts) and Server Fault (for system admins). It’s always seemed like a perfect platform for librarians.
The proposal is for “Q&A site for librarians and library professionals where they can share their expertise about libraries and everything in them” – a replacement for the Unshelved Answers site. In order to reach the beta stage, it needs potential users to offer their support.
Once upon a time you could set up your own Stack Exchange-based site for the cost of hosting, but this is no longer the case. Nowadays, sites must go through quite an arduous process and collect enough support to make the cut. The librarian site is currently at the Commitment stage but needs a bit of a push to make it into an active community.
