A conference which explores and discusses themes, roles and responsibilities of the library and librarian in supporting open libraries and the use of technology.

The annual conference of the Cilip Multimedia, Information and Technology Group (MmIT) is taking place at the Richard Roberts Building at the University of Sheffield on Thursday 14th September 2017.

Library and information services are doing more than ever to deliver services, spaces and resources that are open, accessible and reusable. The term open can be applied to education, research, data, the Web, and the physical library space.  Library and information professionals play an increasingly important role in the delivery and facilitation of services that embrace a transparent society, in both the public and private sectors. MmIT believes that library and information services across all sectors play a significant role in supporting and developing the use of open data, educational resources, spaces and research with their user communities.   In addition to expert keynote speakers, the conference will seek to facilitate discussion and the sharing of good practice in answer to some of these questions plus more, with colleagues from across all sectors of the library and information world:

  • How does your library provide an open and accessible space for users and provide digital access to information, knowledge and scholarship?
  • What is your library’s role in providing, supporting and delivering open educational resources and in helping users to understand the pedagogy of technology and the use of technology in all aspects of education?
  • Do you support academics regarding scholarly communications and the use of technology to communicate their open access research and data?
  • Are you working with public communities and academics in the hosting of open data?
  • What are the ethical and practical issues you face in making data usable and reusable?
  • What technologies are you employing as a professional to help open up your resources and services to users?
  • Do you make your users aware of their rights / responsibilities and the legalities of operating openly in a digital word? (eg. Individual online presence, standards of conduct, etiquette etc.)?

The conference themes will consist of your library’s role in:

  • Open Access
  • Open Educational Resources
  • Open Software
  • Open library spaces
  • Open Data
  • The ethics around the use of the above

If you or your library has a story to tell about any of these themes, we would love to hear from you and would strongly encourage you to answer our call for papers. The 2017 MmIT conference has the potential to bring together best practice from across all sectors of the library and information profession, and we sincerely hope to receive responses from public libraries, health libraries, academic libraries, commercial libraries, specialist libraries, school libraries and more. If you have an impact on the digital life of your constituents then you have a potential paper or case study to share with us.

Submissions can be in the forms of papers or workshops and all will last for 50 minutes each (including questions).

Please submit the title and description of your proposed session online at: https://goo.gl/forms/JNyWsSCvQTBI5vqz1 5.00 p.m. on Friday 30th June. If you have any questions email them to mmitcommittee@gmail.com
