On 9th January 2-18, the Multimedia, Information and Technology Group (MmIT) held Future Proofing the Library, our January 2018 half-day seminar, incorporating the MmIT AGM for the 2017 calendar year.
MmIT Chair Andy Tattersall welcomed the delegates to Future Proofing the Library: addressing the issues of today for an innovative tomorrow.
- David Parkes (De Montfort University) introduced Horizon Scanning – Reading Signals. He discussed techniques, outcomes and tactical insight in the field of near future work in education, technology and society. His slides are now available at: https://www.slideshare.net/MmITGroup/horizon-scanning-reading-signals.
- Tabitha Witherick (Libraries Unlimited) gave a lively presentation on Connecting communities through collaboration which demonstrated how libraries are uniquely placed to empower people to access, explore and create technology. However, to meet the changing needs of local communities we need to go beyond simple access to resources and curate communities of interest, bringing the skilled together with the curious, the tech savvy with the digitally excluded, and businesses with their future workforce.
- Martin Hamilton (JISC) encouraged us to think about future-proofing our careers by becoming Librarians in Outer Space! We are becoming used to living in an interconnected world, with vast amounts of data at our fingertips, but what happens when our preconceptions are challenged? Martin’s slides are now available at: https://www.slideshare.net/MmITGroup/librarians-in-outer-space.
- Finally in seek – sift – share: current awareness and trend-watching for information professionals Alison McNab (University of Huddersfield) discussed tools and strategies to stay up-to-date. We also fitted in refreshments and our AGM for the 2017 calendar year. Many thanks to MmIT members and delegates for contributing to such a lively start to the new year, and to CILIP for hosting us.
